Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service are the four pillars that National Honor Society membership is based on.  Five Oakland High School students; Seth Ethington, Michael Hudson, Johnna Roberts, Emily Royer, and Vanessa Zimmerman were the most recent inductess into the local chapter of NHS.

The induction ceremony was held on March 12th in the Lake Crest library.  Current NHS President, Ian Goatley, presided over the ceremony.  In this role, Goatley had the opportunity to present the guest speaker for the night, EIU President Dr. William Perry.

Perry talked about leadership and how it can be defined in many different ways depending upon who you ask.  Dr. Perry asked the current NHS members as well as the new inductees to think of someone they consider a leader and one word to describe that person.  He also asked them to come up with one word that others would use to describe them in a leadership role they may hold.  Perry emphasized the importance of staying true to your word, the word used to describe yourself.  He told the students that word may change over time, but if they continue to use that word as the driving force behind their decisions and actions they will stay true to themselves.

In addition to Goately, the entire NHS current membership took part in the induction ceremony as well.  Those members are Gabriel Blair, Duncan Eastin, Maddie Flesner, Chloe Grimes, Alex Hudson, Kayla McKinney, and Tessa Temples.  The Oakland High School National Honor Society advisor is Mrs. Greta Henry.
